Patio and Sidewalk Design
Most sidewalks and patios made with bluestone pattern stone (squares and rectangles) are laid out in a random pattern based on a blend of different sizes of stones.
All standard bluestone pattern sizes are in 6" increments so they fit together naturally.
"Mixed" size pallets are our best seller. While each mixed pallet contains a different blend of sizes,
all stones in a mixed pallet will be one of these sizes:
12" x 12", 12" x 18", 12" x 24", 12" x 30", 12" x 36", 18" x 18", 18" x 24", 18" x 30", 18" x 36", 24" x 24", 24" x 30" and 24" x 36".
If a pre-determined pattern is preferred over a random pattern, please see 5 templates below for your convenience. The patterns vary in complexity. Please feel free to download and print these templates as needed. If you don't see a template you like, reach out for additional options. We can also accommodate customer provided templates. Pre-assembled "kits" can be ordered in natural cleft or thermal finish for a small upcharge beyond the cost of the stone.
- "Simplicity" was designed in-house and uses only 12" x 18" stones to create either a 3 foot wide sidewalk or a patio in 3 foot increments.
- "Running Bond" was designed in-house and uses mostly 12" x 18" with a just a few 12" x 12" pieces mixed in to make a 10 x 11 foot patio.
- "Basketweave" was designed in-house and uses 12" x 12" and 12" x 18" to make an easily expandable patio.
The three patterns above have the advantage of smaller (and thereby lighter) pieces. 1" thick bluestone weighs about 13# per square foot so a 12" x 18" piece only weighs approximately 20 pounds. 1-1/2" bluestone weighs about 20# per square foot, so a 12" x 18" weighs approximately 30 pounds.
- "Pattern C" was designed in-house 30 years ago for one of our wholesale customers and has since become an industry standard. It is a 100 sq ft repeatable pattern containing 5 different size stones.
- "Pattern 2" is an industry standard and kits assembled based on this pattern are sometimes referred to as "Patio Packs" in the industry. It is a 100 sq ft repeatable pattern containing 8 different size stones.
