"Thermal" is a reference to the heat used to create this finish. The stone is soaked with water and then high heat is applied. The rapidly escaping steam pops small bits of stone off the surface, creating a uniform texture. (See image L above)
"Pattern" bluestone gets its name from how it is most often used... laid out in a pattern of squares and rectangles to make a patio or sidewalk. This stone is most commonly laid in a bed of sand or cement. Pattern stone can have either a natural cleft or thermal finish.
If a natural cleft finish is desired for your stairs, please see "Steppers" on the "Other kinds of Bluestone" tab at the top of this page
Thermal pattern has tighter sizing tolerances than natural cleft bluestone. The thickness is consistent from piece to piece.
Thermal pattern bluestone and bluestone treads have a uniform texture due to the thermalling process.
Both these attributes give a modern, sleek vibe to these products. If your project has a historic or rustic feel, natural cleft products are probably a better choice.
When bluestone is used as stairs the pieces are called "treads" (because you tread on them). Treads can also be used as wall caps, porch landings, pool coping, windowsills and many other applications.
Tread pricing includes thermal finish on the face (the part you step on) and one long edge. If additional edges will be visible in the finished project, they should also have thermal edging. Please specify which edges will show when ordering.
Treads are most often sold in 1/2", 1", 1 and 1/2" or 2" thicknesses, but custom thicknesses can be ordered.
6" thick treads are sometimes referred to as "King" treads, "One piece step and risers" or "Super" treads
Dynamite is used to split large blocks of stone free from the bedrock.
Some can be as large as full size SUV's!
The size / shape / and quality of the block determines if it will become treads or pattern stone. The blocks are sawn with water-cooled diamond encrusted rotary blades or wires.
When making treads, the blocks are cut into slices. The slices are cut to length and the thermal finish is applied.
Standard treads have thermal finish on the top and one long edge. Thermal finish can be applied to other edges as needed. Normally, any edge visible in the finished design would have the thermal finish. For example, a tread used to cap a wall would be finished on both of the exposed long edges. A staircase where the short edges of the treads are visible would normally have three sides of each stone thermalled.
Thermal pattern is created the same way that treads are, but the pieces are smaller. Standard sizes are 12" x 12" to 24" x 36" in 6" increments. Pattern only has thermal finish on the one side that will face up when laid. The edges and other face are not given this finish as those edges will be hidden.
First, select either full color range or blue color range. Blue color range pallets will consist of different shades of blue and gray. Full color range pallets normally contain blue / gray stones with swooshes of brown. Please see the "Inspiration" tab above for images of finished projects in both full color range and blue range stone to help you decide which look you prefer. Blue range is slightly more expensive than full color range.
Second, decide which thickness range you prefer. Both 1" and 1-1/2" thicknesses are standard. 1/2" thick is also available but lead time is longer. There is very little thickness variation in thermal pattern because all edges are cut with a saw. 1-1/2" stone and 1/2" stone is slightly more expensive than 1" stone.
1/2" is recommended for indoor installations. 1" is recommended for climates that have little frost heave. Can also be appropriate for colder climates if setting in concrete or with a deep bed of aggregate. 1-1/2" is recommended for colder climates or where breakage is a concern.
Third, decide what sizes you want. Bluestone pattern is sold in "solid" pallets, "mixed size" pallets, and "kit" pallets. Solid pallets contain all the same size stone. (Please note that there are often "book end" pieces on the outside of a solid pallet that are a different size in order to help the pallet ship safely). Mixed size pallets are our best seller and have the quickest lead time. They contain a random blend of sizes between 12" x 12" and 24" x 36". Every pallet is a unique blend of sizes. "Kit" pallets are assembled to match a template. The exact qty of each size stone is known ahead of time. See "Inspiration" tab at the top of this page for available kits / templates.
Lastly, decide how much to order. Find the square footage you need to cover and increase by a small percentage to allow for installation flexibility. Bluestone is brittle by nature so it's recommended to also add 2% for breakage in transit. Pattern stone is "nominally" sized, meaning each dimension is smaller by 1/2" to allow for joints within your calculations. Example: a 12" x 12" stone will actually measure approximately 11-1/2" x 11-1/2". Square footage per pallet varies depending on the sizes you select. When you place your order, please be clear if the square footage you're ordering is the MINIMUM you need (we'll round up to the next full pallet) or the MAXIMUM you'll accept (we'll get as close to that number as possible without going over). Exact piece counts can be ordered, but there may be a handling fee for custom palletizing.

Bullnosing is normally used for pool coping. Swimmers who rest their arms on the edge of the pool often appreciate the smooth edge vs. a sharp 90 degree angle. 1-1/2" or 2" thick treads can be bullnosed.
This edge treatment is applied by hand. Each "chip" is created by a blow with a hammer and chisel. The center where the chips don't touch has a thermal finish.
The thicker the stone, the larger the center section which is untouched by the chips.
The hard 90 degree corner on the top edge of each stone is removed to make the edge less sharp. The middle of the edge remains flat, not curved like a bullnosed edge would be.
Treads shown above have been eased on both top and bottom edges.
"Standup" bluestone (AKA "Broken Flagstone" or "Irregular") gets its name from the way that the bluestone is shipped... standing up on pallets.
Thermal Standup comes from the process used to create bluestone treads and thermal pattern. Just like natural cleft standup, large pieces are stood up vertically on pallets for shipment and wrapped with chicken wire.
Our standup is sold by weight so you pay less for smaller pallets and more for larger. Beware of sellers that charge a standard price per pallet regardless of how much stone is contained within.
If the pieces shown in these images are too large / difficult to handle, please consider ordering "Wallstone" or "Garden path". Details on these products are found on the "Other Types of Bluestone" tab at the top of this page
Pieces of standup are laid in a bed of sand or mortar like a jigsaw puzzle to make patios and sidewalks. Larger pieces are broken by hand to the shapes needed to fill the space.
The finish is the same as thermal pattern or treads would have.
For a closeup of the finish please see "Image J" in the gallery above
While most pieces will be fully thermalled on one face, there may be an occasional section that did not receive this finish. Note in the image above that there's a rim of unthermalled surface on the piece in the foreground of the image.
Thermal standup is a great choice for projects where consistent color, texture and thickness is desired, but a more informal look than thermal pattern is needed.
Thermal standup has a consistent thickness of 1-1/2".
Standup is also available in natural cleft finish, but the thickness varies from piece to piece in that product.
Because most treads and thermal pattern produced is premium blue, thermal standup is also only available in premium blue color range.
If a variety of colors is desired, natural cleft standup is a better choice.
All thermal standup is consistently 1-1/2" thick and blue. If you need a different thickness or color, please consider natural cleft standup.
We sell standup is by weight, not by pallet, in order to ensure we're charging our customers fairly. Each pallet has approximately 1.5 tons of stone. Calculating coverage can be difficult as there are many variables. The artistic style of the installer, how large the joints are and the size and shape of the installation site all play a huge role. As a general rule of thumb, a ton covers 75 - 100 sq ft (113 - 150 sq ft per pallet).
